Stage one - initial search

Stage One
This is an initial survey of brass bands in Ireland based primarily on information which was available in the Irish Times. It also draws on some information available in other newspapers and on other brass band sites.  It is by no means a complete list at this point.

How can you help?
We are keen to build up more information about as many of these bands as possible. Part of this initial research is to help identify missing (now extinct) bands (a reference to a newspaper or other artefact would be helpful).   Help is also needed in verifying that the bands indicated on the map did or do exist, verifying their location, and indicating if there might be further information available and from where or from whom.

Disclaimer
  1. The majority of bands are indicated on the map because they have been mentioned in newspaper articles as being a 'brass band'. We know the terms brass, reed and wind bands were used inconsistently and somewhat interchangeably, but for now this is the approach that has been taken.
  2. This is only based on reports in one or two newspapers. There's still a huge amount of work to do, particularly in looking at regional newspapers.
  3. The focus until now has been on extinct bands.  We know there's lots of famous bands that are still in existence North and South which are not listed here at this point.
